Shubman Gill vs Ruturaj Gaikwad: Who Will Be India’s Next Cricket Superstar?

Ever since the retirement of India’s star batter Virat Kohli, there has been much debate about who could possibly fill his shoes. Young talents Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad have emerged as front-runners, impressing everyone with their exceptional stroke play.

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has shared his thoughts on the matter, suggesting that both players should be included in the playing XI due to their immense talent. He believes that Ruturaj has shown more consistency compared to Gill but also acknowledged Gill’s blend of elegance and power.

“Why can’t we have both of them? They’re simply great players. Their numbers speak for themselves, both have outstanding records in T20 cricket. You can’t choose between the two. If we look at consistency, Ruturaj is slightly ahead in terms of numbers. However, Shubman Gill offers a mix of touch and power,” Uthappa said on Sony Sports Network.

“It’s difficult to choose between them. Ideally, both should play, and why shouldn’t India utilize both of them? They are all-format players,” he added.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Russell Arnold, also on the panel, favored Gill as Kohli’s ideal replacement due to his ability to adapt his game effortlessly.

“I would pick Shubman Gill because he brings a lot of stability. The other players have flair, but Gill can change gears whenever needed. He’s different from the rest of the Indian players, not relying solely on power but placing his shots strategically,” Arnold commented on Sony Sports Network.

A Look at Gill and Gaikwad’s Numbers

In his 20 T20I matches so far, Gill has amassed 539 runs at an average of 29.94 and a strike rate of 142.59, including one hundred and three fifties, with a highest score of 126*. Gaikwad, on the other hand, has scored 633 runs from 20 innings at an average of 39.56 and a strike rate of 143.53, with one hundred and four fifties.

Interestingly, Gaikwad did not find a spot in the T20I squad for the ongoing Sri Lanka series despite his remarkable performance in the format since 2023. He has scored 498 runs from his last 12 innings at an average of 62.25 and a strike rate of 150, including one hundred and three fifties.

With both players just starting their international careers, it will be fascinating to see who stands out as the next big thing in Indian cricket after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
