India’s opening day at the Paris Olympics 2024 was a dramatic mix of highs and lows, with Manu Bhaker shining as a beacon of hope. The 22-year-old shooter made headlines by securing a spot in the finals of the women’s 10-metre Air Pistol event. Bhaker clinched third place in the qualifiers with a score of 580, trailing behind Hungary’s Veronika Major and South Korea’s Oh Ye Jin. She is now on a quest to become the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal.
Paris Olympics 2024 Highlights
While Bhaker’s performance was a standout, the rest of the shooting events were less favorable for India. The mixed pairs of Ramita Jindal & Arjun Babuta and Elavenil Valarivan & Sandeep Singh failed to advance to the finals of the 10m Air Rifle Mixed events. Sarabjot Singh narrowly missed the finals in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event, finishing ninth.
In rowing, debutant Balraj Panwar achieved a commendable fourth-place finish in his Heat for the Men’s single sculls, clocking a time of 7:07.11. He will compete in the repechage round on Sunday. The Indian hockey team, however, had a strong start, overcoming New Zealand 3-2 in their first group match.
