Rohit Sharma Reflects on India’s Defeat Against Sri Lanka: Middle-Overs Batting Woes and Adapting to Spin

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his disappointment following the 32-run loss to Sri Lanka in the second ODI, emphasizing the need for discussions about the batting performance during the middle-overs. India’s chase of 241 fell short, collapsing to 208, largely due to leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay’s remarkable six-wicket haul, which highlighted India’s ongoing struggle against spin.

“Every loss stings,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation. “It’s not just about those 10 overs where we lost six wickets for 50 runs; consistent cricket is key, and we failed in that regard. It’s disappointing, but these setbacks occur.”

Rohit pointed out the necessity for Indian batters to quickly adapt to the pitch conditions. “You have to play according to the situation. With the left-right combination, we aimed to rotate the strike better, but credit to Jeffrey for his six wickets. Despite the setback, my approach remains unchanged. My 65-run innings came from taking risks, and while it’s disappointing not to finish the game, I won’t compromise on my intent. Understanding the nature of the pitch, it’s crucial to capitalize during the powerplay,” he added.

Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka was satisfied with their total of 240, considering the conditions. “240 was a good score. As a captain, having multiple spin options is a positive challenge. Jeffrey’s spell was exceptional,” Asalanka said, while also expressing his intent to contribute more with the bat in the next match. “I’m primarily a batter, and I need to score runs first, then I can bowl a few overs.”

Player of the Match, Jeffrey Vandersay, acknowledged the pressure he faced stepping in for Wanindu Hasaranga, who was out due to a hamstring injury. “Coming into the side with such pressure, especially after a layoff, it’s easy to take the credit. But the batters who posted 240 deserve credit too,” said Vandersay. He emphasized the need to keep pushing himself to secure a regular spot in the team. “Hasaranga is our top spinner. I have to understand the team dynamics and keep pushing myself.”

Vandersay shared how taking Rohit Sharma’s wicket boosted his confidence. “There was help from the pitch, and I aimed to bowl in good areas. Getting Rohit’s wicket first really boosted my confidence,” he concluded.
